What's wrong with dating sims? Well, that's what I'll be talking about in today's blog post! I've had a problem with dating sims for a little while now, but I couldn't figure out why. However, I recently realized the issue. Dating sims just aren't personal anymore. They're supposed to be first person dating simulators, but they just aren't. Instead, you play as a protagonist with a set appearance, a history, a backstory, and extremely limited options. A lot of the protagonists even have pre-set names if you don't change it. You don't get to pick who you are, and you don't get to act the way you usually do. They aren't dating simulators anymore, they're just a romance novel. Maybe adding more things would be difficult, but it's been done before. And they don't have to add a lot of things, or change a lot of the story. Having three or four very different options allows people to choose what to say, and it doesn't have to affect the story, since it would only affect the current dialogue. It's also easy to have a faceless protagonist, or be able to choose what they look like. Twisted Wonderland does a good job of having a faceless protagonist, and it doesn't even confirm the player's gender. It also provides two or more completely different options so you can pick whichever one is right for you. This is impressive, especially since Twisted Wonderland isn't even a dating sim. It just proves it's not that difficult to make an immersive story. Companies just don't do it anymore. But, those are mostly just my thoughts on this topic. I mainly made this post because of What In Hell Is Bad, which is probably one of the least immersive games I've ever played. Nonetheless, I hope you all still enjoyed this blog post!
