Why were otakus always ridiculed? Well, that's what I'll be talking about in today's blog post! Outside of Japan, an otaku is an intense anime fan. But in Japan, an otaku can be a fan of anything. Because of this, spending so much time on hobbies was always seen as a waste. Japan values hard work, so spending time on hobbies instead was looked down on. However, in recent years, Japan has been trying to encourage people to have more balanced lives. So, otakus are being shown in a more positive light. This includes fans of anime, videogames, and anything else. But you'll also still see a lot of anime and manga about overworked and burned out office workers, manga artists, and even game developers.
