If you have Xiao, his voice lines make it clear that he cares for the traveler. He has also saved the traveler more than once during story quests. Aside from the traveler, he has shown a bit of care for the other adepti, and he also goes out of his way to help humans and ghosts. So why does he seem so uncaring? Well, it's actually for a few reasons. First of all, adepti are usually very formal creatures. The ones who are more casual are often part human, or they have lived with humans for a long time. Xiao has lost many companions in the past as well, which would make it difficult for him to make new connections. Finally, Xiao is plagued with his karmic burden. The corruption not only affects him, but also those around him. This means he has to keep his distance for their own safety. This is actually the main reason Xiao is very distant. Not only is he not familiar with other people, but it's dangerous for others too.
