It's post time! For today's blog post, I will be talking about Steamboat Willie. Steamboat Willie is a Mickey Mouse cartoon that debuted in 1928. On January 1st, 2024, it will finally enter the public domain. This means Steamboat Willie and all of its characters will be free to use for the public. Many people think this marks the end of Disney or Mickey Mouse, but I disagree. Disney has many other works and versions of Mickey Mouse that won't be affected by this at all. Disney is known for many things, and they're even a big part of the anime community. They created Kingdom Hearts, Tsum Tsums, and Twisted Wonderland. They've also helped with the English dubs for Studio Ghibli movies, Pokemon, and Yokai Watch. So Disney doesn't have to worry at all. Not only this, but they still own the rights to Mickey Mouse. They'll just be losing that one version of him. I know this doesn't have very much to do with anime, but Disney is involved in many things, and people have been worried about what this means for the future of the company. Some people have even been saying Disney is retiring Mickey Mouse, even though that isn't true at all. Mickey has appeared in many things; including Kingdom Hearts and Twisted Wonderland. He's the face of Disney, and losing one version of him won't affect the company much at all. I wanted to talk about this because there's been a lot of false information floating around recently regarding this, and that doesn't help anyone at all. Nonetheless, I hope you all still enjoyed this blog post!
